Morning Rituals at The Inn

The Inn's location couldn't be more perfect for game day. Situated right on campus, it puts you in the heart of Hokie Nation from the moment you step outside. After a quick shower, I head down to the lobby where fellow fans are already gathering, their voices animated with pre-game excitement. The breakfast at Preston's is bustling; everyone fueling up for what promises to be a long, incredible day.

I debate whether to grab coffee, but my mind is already racing ahead to kickoff. The weather is crisp and clear – perfect football weather. I can see the first tailgaters setting up their spots at their RVs in the parking lot, claiming their territory for the day's festivities.

The March to the Tailgate

By 9 AM, I'm walking across campus with my game day gear: cooler in tow, folding chair slung over my shoulder, and wearing my lucky Hokie jersey that's seen more game days than I can count. The energy builds with every step as more and more fans emerge from dorms, hotels, and parking lots, all converging on the tailgating areas like tributaries flowing into a river.

The smell hits you first; charcoal grills firing up, the sizzle of burgers and bratwurst, the sweet aroma of someone's famous barbecue sauce. Then comes the sound: classic rock mixing with fight songs, the pop of drink cans opening, and the constant hum of excited conversation about today's matchup.

Tailgating Magic

Our tailgate spot is in the shadow of Lane Stadium, and it's already transforming into a miniature festival. Canopy tents create a small village of orange and maroon, each setup reflecting its owners' personalities: from the elaborate RV setups with satellite TV to the simple but spirited card table arrangements.

The food is legendary. Someone always brings their grandmother's famous chili. There are always those perfectly grilled hot dogs with all the fixings. And without fail, someone shows up with a cooler full of homemade cookies shaped like the VT logo. It's a potluck where everyone wins.

But tailgating isn't just about the food, it's about the community. Strangers become friends over shared predictions about the game. Alumni swap stories about their college days. Kids throw footballs while parents catch up on everything that's happened since the last home game.

The cornhole tournaments are serious business, with unofficial championships decided between rival tailgate groups. Someone always brings a speaker, and when "Enter Sandman" comes on, the entire area erupts in synchronized jumping and singing. It's a preview of what Lane Stadium will sound like in just a few hours.

The Build-Up

As kickoff approaches, the energy becomes almost tangible. Fans start making their way toward the stadium, but nobody's in a rush. This is part of the ritual – the slow, celebratory procession from tailgate to seats. Groups merge and separate like a human river flowing toward Lane Stadium.

Nothing – and I mean nothing – prepares you for Enter Sandman at Lane Stadium. As Metallica's iconic opening riff begins, 66,000 people become one organism. The stadium literally shakes as everyone jumps in unison. The ground vibrates beneath your feet. It's not just loud; it's a physical experience that you feel in your chest, your bones, your soul.

The team emerges from the tunnel, and the roar is deafening. This is why people travel thousands of miles to be here. This is why alumni plan their entire year around these Saturdays. This moment, when the team takes the field to the sound of thunder created by human voices, is pure magic.

The Game Experience

Lane Stadium during a game is sensory overload in the best possible way. Every first down is celebrated like a touchdown. Every defensive stop brings the crowd to its feet. The students in the south end zone are relentless, never sitting, never quiet, feeding energy to both the team and the rest of the stadium.

As I finally make it back to my room, physically exhausted but emotionally energized, I can't help but reflect on why this experience is so special. It's not just the football – though the game was incredible. It's not just the venue – though Lane Stadium is magnificent.

It's the community. It's the shared experience of 66,000 people coming together for one afternoon to celebrate something bigger than themselves. It's the traditions that connect current students with alumni from decades past. It's the way perfect strangers become friends over a shared love of Hokie football.

Tomorrow I'll head home, but I'm already counting down the days until I can return to Blacksburg, return to Lane Stadium, and once again be part of the magic that is Virginia Tech football.

Accessible Parking

• Designated accessible parking areas are available at all ceremony venues
• A valid state-issued accessible parking permit is required
• For Lane Stadium ceremonies, accessible parking is available in the Stadium Lot and Chicken Hill Lot
• For Cassell Coliseum ceremonies, use the Cassell Lot
